Abstract: | Discussion and resolution of the historical and political problem posed by the rendering of the English word 'state' in Swahili - nchi, serikali, taifa, dola? Various research methods were used - the frequency of occurrence, the meanings of the renderings in dictionaries, an etymological survey, and an analysis of the applied contextual mean ing of the terms within three main periods (before and during German colonial rule, British colonial rule, and after independence), Through direct confrontations, comparison, and eliminations, a clear rendering for 'state' - viz. taifa and dola - was established.
