Abstract: | An attempt is made to give explanatory rules for the palatalization of bilabials as it occurs in Tsonga and Xhosa, i.e. in the passive for Xhosa and in the diminutive and locative in Xhosa and Tsonga. Reference is made to Venda because this language has variants of the passive extension - iwa and they are essential in any explanation of palatalization of bilabials. Tswana is the other language which is important for this phonological pheneomenon. It has a vide range of dialects and they have a great variety of forms of palatalization. Use has also been made of Northern Sotho whose northern dialects border geographically on Venda. Ref., notes. |
