Abstract: | In East Africa, Swahili functions as the communicator between peoples speaking a hundred different languages, and in so functioning, Swahili helps spread the new terms and ideas to those who have not yet learned them. Swahili is not only the tool of renewal, it is itself constantly being renewed by the acquisition of new words, and by losing old ones. The author explains the mechanisms of the adaptation of loan-words. He traces the origin of loan-words in Swahili and indicates how they travelled through history. Works consulted, notes. |
