Abstract:Overview of African literary activity in Portuguese. Parallel to a colonial literature there is an African line of development, arising from a vague regional consciousness and a deep racial feeling. The definite foundations of an African literature of Portuguese expression were laid by a series of precise literary events: (1) in Cape Verde, the appearance of the review Claridade (1936/60); (2) in Sao Tomé and Principe, the publication of poems by Francisco Jose Tenreiro in 1943; (3) in Angola, the publication of the review Mensagem (1951/52); and (4) in Mozambique, that of the review; Msako (1952). Guinea-Bissau never went beyond the phase of colonial literature. Notes.
