Abstract:The Reverend F.A. Ramseyer, one of the most remarkable missionaries who ever worked on the Gold Coast and Ashanti, founded the Basel (Presbyterian) Church in Kumasi. With another captive, S.J. Kuhne, Ramseyer wrote 'Four Years in Ashantee' (London, 1875). This paper deals with the part that Ramseyer played in the campaign for the Gold Coast Government to take over Ashanti in the early 1890s. For a better understanding of his 'concern' about the Ashanti a description is given of his encounter with them and his life among them at Kumasi. Also the background to the campaign is explained.
