Abstract:Analysis of studies of the wide spectrum of reactions to colonial role which can reasonably be considered as 'millenarian movements', shows the recurrence of the theme of return to a 'Golden Past' in many such movements. Aim is to suggest a parallel between such a concept and some aspects of Senghor's ideology as exemplified in his literary and political writings. Subsequently other aspects, particularly Negritude, the Civilisation of the Universal and African Socialism. Suggested is that these concepts are colsely linked with - and indeed originate from - Senghor' s theme of return to a Golden Past. Finally is seen whether the study of millenarian movements can, in any way, help to understand the stateman's philosophy and contribution to his people' s cultural values. Bibl., notes, appendix: Brief curriculum vitae of L.S. Senghor.
