Abstract: | Problems involving the carrying out of the demographic surveys among African peoples are analysed and the advantages of such surveys over censuses given. The bases of this survey were the general census of 1950, the sample survey 1949-51, and the civil register which is regularly brought up to date, for 1949-51. The survey includes the whole population, a total of 84.155, made up of manjaco, Brame, Felupe (original peoples of the area), Balanta and others (recent settlers). Low masculinity ratios, due to emigration. The peoples studied are very prolific, but the high infant martality rate diminishes the effects. Tables. |
