| Abstract: | The disapproval for Camara Laye's 'The African Child' occurring from time to time in African journals usually concerns its lack of commitment to the anti-colonial struggle. On the other hand 'The African Child' has been received enthusiastically by its readers in Europe and the West Indies. It is shown here that 'The African Child' is committed to an anti-colonial line on the level of cultural polemics; its organisation and texture is examined in some detail in order to account for doubts about its literary quality.
