| Abstract: | Presenting instances of literary critics on the works of African writers the author signals a reflection of a profound lack of knowledge about African cultural traditions coupled with an ignorance of the existence, nature and depth of the heritage of African oral literature, in what many Western critics issue on African literature. In most cases some vague literary background or a landing on an African soil has not been enough to correct this intellectual imbalance. In spite of some of the consequently unsound views expressed by such critics, African literature has its roots in Africa and is neither an appendage to French or British literature nor yet an African replica of popular Western authors. It should he looked at objectively or not at all. Notes. |
