Abstract: | Perhaps the single most important factor which accounts for the fundamental departure from the previous direction of African social development in African society is the Western education introduced by the Europeans and consciously accellerated by the African states after independence. This article deals with education as the major instrument of modernization and social change. Sections: Introductory - Elements of traditional society - The colonial situation and social change - The African reaction - Independence and after - Education and social change - Education, nation building, and economic development - Proposals for the future of African education.
