Abstract: | Studies have been carried out in selected village areas throughout the Federation to investigate the factors affecting youth employment in the diverse Nigerian scene and to show patterns of social and economic change. One of these studies is of the village of Qlla in the Western State. Qlla has a resident population of about 6,000, predominantly Yoruba people. This paper presents a condensed version of the inquiry: Population growth - The school and the community - Youth and the search for jobs - Lines of migration - Village land and its tenure - Bush-fallow system of farming - Capital and the restraints of its formation - Labour: its requirements, supply, and distribution - Improvements in farming - Local income patterns - Savings - Qlla villagers - School leavers and village employment opportunities. The exodus of school leavers from the village is explored against the background of local farming practices and incomes and of migration patterns established over a long period to other parts of Nigeria and West Africa.
