|Patterns and prospects of shareholding in recently indigenised public companies in Nigeria
|The Nigerian Journal of Economic and Social Studies
|The Nigerian Enterprises Promotion Decree (NEPD), 1972, was designed to promote enterprises in which citizens of Nigeria would participate fully, or play a dominant role. The present paper provides some information about those who actually did acquire shares in response to the indigenisation decree and uses the data to evaluate the implementation of the stated indigenisation objectives. The paper discusses in turn: the data and methodology of the study; the results, noting in particular the geographical and occupational distribution of shareholders; the method of share allocation, the extent to which the objectives of the indigenisation policy have been net, and the implications of the results of the study for the future.
