Abstract: | The present essay is a by-product of research into the history of the Carrier Corps, undertaken in Kenya and the United Kingdom. The information obtained is therefore more comprehensive for Kenya than for other territories. But is it possible to reach tentative answers to two basic questions: How many Africans served in the British forces in East Africa during World War I? How many died? By way of introduction, the author comments briefly on the existing literature and on the potential significance of such statistics for the historian. Notes, sum., tab. |
