Abstract:Although the government of Kenya has expressed concern for a 'free and universal education', the primary education in Kenya is, to say the least, very far from fulfilling these essential conditions. This paper stresses the following points: There is a built-in inequity in the Kenyan primary education and this inequity is getting more and more institutionalised. The democratisation and the swahilisation of the system is of paramount importance for the future of Kenya as a nation. Finally the A.'s propose a few practical ways of achieving the urgently needed and indispensable reform. Ref., tables.
