Abstract:This article attempts to examine the status of modern languages in Nigeria, the circumstances which made it possible for English to assume if powerful position in Nigeria, and to remain unrivalled by either the Nigerian mother tongues or any of the other European languages such as French or German. The paper also discusses the progress in the teaching and learning of French and German as from 1859, when both languages were recognised in the secondary schools' curriculum, to 1959 when University College, Ibadan, appointed two lecturers to from the nucleus of a Modem Languages Department which was later established in 1962.
