Abstract: | To illustrate the involvement of the Nigerian proletariat in politics during the period 1912-1964, three approaches are adopted. First, the origins of the labour movement in Nigeria are traced, as well as the role of the colonial state in 'guiding' the development of the unions. Second, the author shows how the unions came to be involved in politics in both the colonial and post-colonial periods. This is done through an examination of broadly representative events and crises, particularly the general strikes of 1945 and 1964, which started as agitations for improved wages and conditions of service, but acquired a political orientation as they progressed. Lastly, the role of the proletariat in the politics of the periods covered is evaluated. Ref., sum. in French and Italian. |
