Abstract:According to the author, Shivji's book fails to deal with the question of classes and class struggle scientifically: his analysis lacks a clear and definitive concept of imperialism. Starting from the writings of Marx and Lenin on imperialism the author analyses the different parts of Shivji's book and shows that it cannot be accepted as a Marxist-Leninist thesis on class struggle in Tanzania. Notes. The debate is continued in Utafiti, 2 (1977), 2, p. 371-391 in an article by Omwony OJWOK entitled 'Review of the debate on imperialism, State, class and the national question'.
