Abstract: | Bethal lies in the centre of Transvaal farming area furthest from any African Reserve. The Bethal area is one of intensive cultivation and suffers from an acute and perpetual shortage of labour. This labour-shortage is met by recruiting forced labour. The Reverend Michael Scott in 1947 has given an account of the working-conditions of this forced labour, which outraged the public conscience, and made of Bethal a concept of ill repute. |
