Abstract:In the first part the instable past of Dahomey with the many coups and changes of government is described as well as the background of the coup of October 26, 1972, in which Major Mathieu Kerekou overthrew the three-man civilian Presidential Council. The second part discusses the new hierarchy and the major points of internal and external policy of the Kerekou government. Of considerable interest are the new measures in education and the reference in the programme to taking over 'vital sectors'. The financial position of the country seems as difficult as ever.
