Abstract: | Examines some phases of cultural change (the formation of national cultures) in African countries. With national culture (an integrated culture on a national base) formation new ideas, foreign to the population, are introduced. This process is examined here in terms of its local context. As each local cultural tradition is unique, the process of its involvement will have unique historical features To make the discussion more concrete, the author brings in some results of his own observations in Tanzania (Iraqw) and Mali (Bambara). Sections: Introduction - 'Acculturation' reconsidered - Local cultural traditions - World cultural elements - Western influences before and after independence - Flows of new elements - New symbols of national integration - National events - National language - Secularization - Demonstration and shortage - Flows of people - Conclusions.
