Abstract:Too well known are the arrogance and prejudices of Victorian and early twentieth-century missionaries, and their general failure to appreciate the strains which their work, and that of the colonial administrations, caused to the peoples they went to civilize, but little is known of the missionaries' backgrounds, in particular of their training. By examining the work of the Church Missionary Society's Training College at Islington the author attempts to get an understanding of missionary attitudes towards Africans in the early years of the twentieth century. This is done by working out the educational attainments of missionary candidates from the nature of their previous occupations, and from the type and amount of training that the C.M.S. saw fit to give them before allocating them to the mission field.
