| Abstract: | Processional crosses, cast in copper, brass or bronze, always played a prominent role in both the ordinary and the festive services of the Ethiopian Church. The crosses have been votive objects and significant ceremonial instruments. Their visual characteristics were apparently influenced by the melodious rhythms of the Ethiopian liturgy. The art form of the ornate, equal-armed Abyssinian cross signifies the abstract but harmonious, iconoclastic but florid nature of the Ethiopian liturgical text; it does not represent the crucified Christ.
