Abstract: | Previous attempts at classification of Igbo 'orature', a term introduced by the East African School of literary critics to replace oral literature, are reviewed, after which the author proposes his own comprehensive classification of this branch of Igbo literature on the basis of the following criteria: form-cum-structure, mode of rendition, occasion of use, theme, and character. This leads to a classification of Igbo orature into three broad genres: oral poetry, oral drama, and folk narrative. The most prevalent stylistic devices employed in Igbo orature generally are figures of speech and oratorical sayings. A few texts from the genre of ritual poetry are provided and their general features discussed. Notes, ref. |
