| Abstract: | Examination of the traditional Ibo society shows the women's social inequality with the men. Although the women occupied a lower status in society than the men, they enjoyed equal basic human rights as the men. Contact with Christianity and Western culture resulted in a lot of social, political and economic changes which affected the traditional status of Ibo women, and led to their social and political emancipation. The attitude in Iboland today towards these changes and their end result depends on the willingness of Ibos to encourage women education, the important factor in the emancipation of Ibo women.
