Abstract:The Holy Ghost Fathers have been in Eastern Nigeria for about 85 years. Arriving originally from France in 1885, the R.C. missionaries exerted a considerable influence far out of proportion to their number. By the time the Catholics arrived, Protestant missions had already enjoyed a headstart position that made them very influential in the areas they had settled. However, it was not until after 1900 that Eastern Nigeria was thoroughly invaded by the various Christian missionary agents. The R.C. played a significant role in this post-1900 mass movement, strong cards being the exploitation of European medicine and the education. The nature of R.G. missionary activity is examined in the study. Notes; ref.
