Abstract: | The aim of this article is to examine critically the present and envisaged role of the institution of chieftainship in Transkeian local government, to judge to what extent it is being successful and, if not, to assume the diagnostic and predictive role of the social scientist, to trace the stresses and strains, the lines of cleavage and the clash of personalities. |
