Abstract: | The purpose of this paper is to outline and analyse the structure and development of the tobacco-growing industry in Rhodesia and Nyasaland during the years 1955-1965 when the three territories of Southern Rhodesia, northern Rhodesia (Zambia) and Nyasaland (Malawi) were members of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, and to summarize experience since then. Though the article is built around the period of Federation some comment on more recent trends is incorporated. The main emphasis in this paper is placed upon the industry in Southern Rhodesia.
