Abstract:This introductory survey of the educational work of the missions in East Africa prior to 1914 shows the impressive extent of the work in terms of staff, schools and scholars and in providing education over the country as a whole. At the top was the education of an elite, receiving the best education they could absorb and the best that the mission could provide. The second branch of education, the training of teachers, was carried on with different degrees of efficiency and enthusiasm. Combined with indirect education, in agriculture, building, trades and crafts, and with the education of girls, the result was a complete education system in embryo, without Government help or guidance. Light is thrown on the subject of motivation. Table; references.
