Abstract: | Evaluation, based upon empirical research, of the function of age grades in the Iqbo village of Amuzi in Ahiazu Local Government Area, Imo State, Nigeria. An age grade comprises the male children born in the village within a span of three years. Information is provided on initiation ceremonies, the organisation of age grades, their roles in social, political, and economic activities, and their social responsibilities. The authors conclude that, although the age grade system has been undergoing a transition to meet modern needs, it still plays a vital role in social life. Biibliogr., gloss. |
