Abstract:The Fertility Survey 1963, undertaken in Soweto (21 townships lying to the south-west of Johannesburg), was designed to obtain the following information: 1. Size of the population by sex and age; 2. Social characteristics of the female population; 3. Fertility; 4. Differential fertility. The survey covered all dwelling units in Soweto, with the exception of Pimville. The fieldwork was started at the beginning of April 1963 and completed by the end of June 1963. The overall picture revealed by the Survey is one of moderately high to high fertility. The fertility rates calculated imply that the Bantu population in Soweto will increase very rapidly during the next generation. Unless fertility rates are greatly reduced, within the near future, the benefits of industrialization will be nullified by population growth. Tables; annexures.
