| Abstract: | Although early white travellers into the country of the Wachagga marvelled at the complicated network of indigenous irrigation accompIished by means of furrows running across the Kilimanjaro slopes, very little has been written about this traditional system. An appreciation of this accomplishement can only be approximated through an understanding of the socio-political organisations of the Wachagga and their rituals. This article is drawn mostly from oral tradition, especially in the Division of Uru, and it is meant to provoke research into this practice which has been instrumental in shaping the life patterns of the Wachagga, and to some extent, their neighbours, the Wapare and Wameru.
