Abstract: | Theories of social change and of culture and personality often develop in vacuums from each other. At times, they seem to develop in vacuums from reality. Too often theoretical logic and a priori reasoning replace empirical investigation of the facts. Too often a simple catch phrase such as 'lack of achievement motivation' is put forth to explain a complicated process which upon investigation is seen as great evidence for achievement motivation given the existential situation of a particular society. Far too often 'traditional' is viewed as synonymous with stagnant or stable. Even more of an illusion is the habit of viewing Hausa adaptations in non-Hausa areas not as adaptations but as survivals or reversions to type. After having set the problem in a more theoretical setting, the author discusses the Hausa adaptations in Ibadan as creative responses to a given set of problems and not as stagnant survivals or reversions to type.
