Abstract: | Eder is a voluntary association established for the purpose of mutual aid in matters of burial and other community concerns. Except for one article, in which eder is briefly mentioned, literature on the subject is non-existent. An attempt is made to give a more comprehensive treatment to the subject. The data have been collected through the investigation of 7 eders. This sample is, because of the basic similarities in the many eders, sufficiently representative. Scheme of the study: Introduction (origin); Structure of eder (formation) membership; officers; meetings; functions of eder; individual members and eder; differences between eders; comparison with Equb; comparison with similar associations in other parts of Africa; influence of eder and equb on social change and the society at large; prospects).
