Abstract: | The use of the term mmonwu among the Igbo is extremely complex and to different Igbo it may mean different things. Here its use is restricted to refer to a unique type of mask drama generally regarded as sacred. The author discusses some of the written sources from which he has derived information concerning the general idea of mmonwu. These sources show how mmonwu drama is related to the general African masking tradition and what critical attention mmonwu has thus far received. Notes. |
