Abstract: | In the first part of this paper, the writer examines the current programmes designed to provide functional education to U.P.E. (Universal Primary Education) beneficiaries in Nigeria. However, in the light of the deficiencies inherent in them and in the current educational system, as well as other problems such as a high dropout rate in schools and early formal school termination, the writer suggests that career education be built into the U.P.E. scheme. Some of the advantages of career education are also spelt out. Finally, the paper presents an elaboration of the various stages of introducing career education from the primary school level through the secondary school education period. Bibl., notes. |
