Abstract:This article presents the findings of a survey of the opportunities for postprimary education and training for adults in Harare, Zimbabwe. A total of 175 registered and unregistered educational and training institutions operating in Harare were identified. Most (63 percent) were owned by private commercial organizations, the rest by government, NGOs, and church organizations. They tended to be concentrated in the city centre. A total of 28 different fields of study were offered, with the five most popular being computer studies, secretarial studies, commercial studies, academic studies, and business studies. Most of the teachers working for these institutions did so on a part-time basis. The percentages of male teachers and students were higher than those of female teachers and students. Only 38.8 percent of the teaching staff in these institutions had diplomas or university degree qualifications. Bibliogr., sum.
