Abstract: | How should schools prepare children for life? This is a perplexing question, especially for the curriculum designer and developer. On the one hand, academics argue that schools should adhere to a pure subject-based curriculum, while another school of thought advocates placing more emphasis on vocational education. An analysis of the 1995 and 1996 'O' level candidate entries in Zimbabwe indicates that an average of only 23 percent of all those who sat for the examinations managed to get a full 'O' level certificate. The rest of the students failed to proceed to advanced level or other institutions of higher learning. The school-leavers also lack vocational skills, given the strong bias towards purely academic subjects in Zimbabwe's secondary school system. The author argues for the introduction of basic vocational education in Zimbabwe's secondary school curriculum, without thereby necessarily neglecting the academic subjects. Bibliogr., sum. |
