Abstract: | Clientship could perhaps be defined as 'a relationship of dpendence not based on kinship, and formally entered into by an act of deliberate choice'. It is a basis of social differentiation in two different ways: it creates formally recognised relationships of superiority and subordination, defined by other criteria than seniority; it is the main channel of social mobility in some societies. The author illustrated her argument with examples from Uganda, Sudan and Ruanda. |
