Abstract: | Hopes to suggest that educational drama could play a fundamental role in formal education at all levels. The paper is based on observation in nursery and primary schools in the Western State of Nigeria and in secondary schools in Kampala, Uganda. The sections are: activity methods - the development of play in young children: its relevance to formal education; stages of play development - socio-dramatic play - educational value of socio-dramatic play - conditions favouring socio-dramatic play development - the role of the teacher - techniques of educational drama (mime and movement - improvisation) - teachers in training - sources of material for educational drama - use of local musical instruments - adapting educational drama to different levels.
