Abstract:A questionnaire consisting of Likert Scale type of items was administered to a stratified sample of 4464 secondary school students in Namibia in order to ascertain, amongst others, their understanding of classroom discipline from the vantage point of the nature of teacher-student relationships, the nature of instructional delivery, instructional resources, sanctions for misbehaviour, and gender issues. The results revealed a classroom situation in which all teachers were confronted with students who misbehaved and often disrupted their classes. Misbehaviour was reported more frequently in classes where teacher-centred lessons were unclearly presented and where teachers had difficulty in using English as a medium of instruction. This situation was exacerbated by teachers' reported inability to manage their classrooms effectively. App., bibliogr., sum.
