Abstract:Features that have been used to describe West African castes are: hierarchical ranking including despised lower castes, occupational specificity, ritual complementarity, endogamy, hereditary membership, residential isolation and the political superiority of farmers over artisan castes. Each of these features is discussed in the context of the Senufo of the northern Ivory Coast. Descriptions of Senufo artisan groups in the literature and Senufo description of these groups do not accurately reflect the present-day reality of the social economic and political relationships of these groups and the farmers amongst whom they live. In fact the characteristics commonly associated with caste systems are often manipulated by the allegedly lower status castes to their benefit rather than by the majority group of farmers.
