Abstract: | Lagos has been the meeting point for the commercial talent of Yorubaland since the opening of the port to trade with Western Europe. The first generation of indigenous traders to take advantage of the new economic opportunities came from all the main Yoruba sub-cultural groups. Several historical accounts have shown that the Tiebu have turned out more prominently in the process and have distinguished themselves as commercial entrepreneurs above other Yoruba subcultural groups. This paper accounts for the early and later phases in the evolution of entrepreneurship among the Ijebu and identifies those factors which have operated in a cumulative fashion to bring about the dominance of the Ijebu in the commercial life of the Yoruba society in the period between the inception of legitimate trade with the West and the present time.
