Abstract:Specifically dealing with the Ghanaian rural youth this paper begins with a discussion of two basic concepts, namely 'youth' and 'rural'. After dealing with the characteristics of the Ghanaian youth in relation to the general population comes a discussion of the government's youth policy in Ghana with special reference to the role to be played by rural youth in the government's action programmes. A consideration of the general rural problem in Ghana pointing out some of the urban-rural differentials in health, housing and other socio-economic amenities, is followed by a discussion of the special problems of the rural youth vis-à-vis their urban counterparts. The final section gives some suggestions for improving the circumstances of the rural youth while at the same time mobilizing them for national development. Ref. notes, tab.
