Geographic term:Sierra Leone
Subject:Yalunka
Abstract:The Yalunka occupy the north-eastern corner of Sierra Leone, the neighbouring part of Guinea, and some other interior portions of Guinea east of Futa Jallon. They speak a Mande language almost identical with Susu. When questioned about where their ancestors lived before they came to Solima - one of the Yalunka states -, most Yalunka will reply that they lived in Futa. A number of texts were collected by asking 'Yalunkayan foloxi di?' ('How did the Yalunka people begin?'). Several of these texts are selected for publication in this paper' As will be seen from the texts the question of how did the Yalunka begin usually evokes a very different response. Notes.
