Abstract:	In the discussion concerning education in the independent African countries little is said as to how the desirable objectives might be achived, nor are the prevalent weaknesses of the various aducational systems examined in sufficient depth. Many of these problems are essentially concerned with aspects of human behaviour that have been studied by psychologists and other social scientists. Using the contributions of Benjamin Leunmi and Peter Kunkel (resp. 'Kulturkonflikt und Erziehung in Afrika' and 'Afrikanische Grundschulprobleme: Das Beispiel Zaire', Africa Spectrum 10 (1975), 1) the author illustrates some of the ways in which a psychological perspective can contribute towards a better understanding.
