Abstract:The purpose of the present study was to map all pharmacies, druggist shops and rural medicine vendors in Addis Ababa, to analyse their geographic distribution, and to determine the origin of customers in an effort to predict where such facilities will be needed most in the future. Population density and growth, location of the individual shops, type of management, and certain socio-economic factors were analysed. Data was gathered through interviews with customers and drug retailers, personal observation and the review of data from the 1961 and 1967 Addis Ababa population censuses. The fact that drug retailers provide a vital link in the health care delivery system of Addis Ababa points out the problem of their accessibility to the whole population of the city, and the author advances the hypothesis that the rapid growth of the urbanised area can lead to constraints on customer travel to drug retailers if new shops fail to move toward the peripheral urban sections together with the population.
