| Abstract: | The purpose of this essay is to provide the reader with broad coverage of the multifaceted topic, introducing in depth the most important aspects. The major emphasis is on the international situation rather than on domestic considerations. There is also emphasis on those states where minority or colonial rule continues - Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, South Africa/Azania, and South West Africa/Namibia. Only a very few references to publications on those states where colonial rule has recently ended - Angola and Mozambique - are included.
