Abstract: | Though American contacts with Africa have multiplied beyond recognition in recent years, Africa has not become of central importance to the US, and the most significant American concern with Africa derives from Washington's desire to prevent Africa from falling into the communist camp. For that purpose the basic positive factors in American policy toward Africa are a desire for economic, social and political development, general approbation for moves designed to promote African collaboration and unity and a hope for the maintenance of peace - all to be carried forward under non-communist auspices. The author examines the difficulties and dilemmas confronting the US in consequence of this attitude and United States relations with several African states. |
