Abstract: | Before the Arab-Israeli war of 6 to 22 October 1973 most African states had diplomatic relations with Israel. Three weeks after that war only Lesotho, Swaziland, Malawi and Mauritius maintained diplomatic relations with Israel. Africa is at present, in a military, political and economic respect, still too weak to exert much weight, but with 41 seats in the Assembly of the U.N. it will be able to be a factor of significance, if acting in a united way, and if the U.N. can enforce her will on both Israel and the Arab states, which is not the case. In a detailed analysis the author demonstrates that the October 1973 War constituted no more than an occasion for the execution of the reversal of sympathies toward Israel and the Arab states by the African states. Also he argues that the reversal has not been sudden and altogether unexpected. Bibl., ref. |
