Abstract: | The Idara rebellion of 1931 in the Sierra Leone Protectorate has been used to illustrate theories of religious radicalism and reform on the one hand, and of rural anti-colonial reactions on the other. In both cases Idara's brief career has been viewed in the context of the economic conditions of the day. But the significance of this Muslim missionary's career has been distorted and overestimated partly because of confusion over the chronology of events, and partly as a result of the uncritical examination of the primary sources. Beyond these, distortion has resulted from forcing events to fit a political model. The present article corrects some of chronogical errors and makes a critical observation on the interpretation of Idara's mission and achivements by making use of the primary sources. Notes. |
